As our dogs get older they start to slow down a little bit, but we do everything in our power to make them comfortable during their final years.
One family did everything and more for their old canine, making sure that he would feel loved they ever rearranged their sleep schedules.
A 14 year old English Springer spaniel named Spike started to have difficulties like many dogs his age and wasn’t able to move like he used to.
Recently he went through a second stroke and that made it difficult for him to climb the stairs.
Sadly this meant that Spike won’t be able to perform one of his favourite activities: sleeping in bed with his family like he used too since he was little.
“The first night we had him, we closed the stair gate and went to bed,” Spike’s owner Catherine Morris told The Dodo. “He whined for a couple of minutes before jumping over the gate in the dark and trotting up into my parents’ room and straight up onto the bed! And that’s where he slept from then on.”
Since their bedroom was on the second floor the poor dog couldn’t reach his favourite spot anymore, but even in his weakened state he kept trying so the family had to block off the stairs.
Seeing Spike sad the family came up with an amazing solution: if the pooch couldn’t come up to them they would come downstairs and sleep with him.
The family members now take turns and set up the pull-out couch to spend the night downstairs with Spike, they make sure their dog feels their love.
When Catherine came back from university she found out the new routine of her parents and wasn’t surprised at all, they always had such a tight bond with Spike.
“They’re absolutely inseparable,” Catherine told The Dodo. “My dad calls him ‘old bean’ and they’re always chatting away.”
“My dad will also bring Spike his water and food to the sofa and feed him by hand to make sure he gets his medicines and keeps his strength up.”
Cute Spike may no longer be young, but he continues to be his family’s beloved pooch.
With this act they proved that they are ready for everything to make the pooch have comfortable final years.
“We love our old boy so much and are so glad to have him in our lives,” Catherine said. “Hopefully, we have made up for his not so good start in life by providing all the love in the world.”
What a sweet family.
