Smiling is the universal language to tell someone how friendly you are, but one shelter dog had a unique smile that seemed to send people away, until someone decided to take a chance on him.
Dustin Kelley decided to adopt a dog so he went out to check on a shelter when he noticed there was a sad-looking golden retriever in the corner, he was alone and shy.
Even though he seemed sad he still had a “smile” on his face — he had a habit of baring his teeth.
The pooch is named Zeus and his smile wasn’t one of those sweet ones let’s put it that way, instead of making him look sweet he looked angry while laughing.
“Not going to lie, it definitely freaked me out a bit at first,” Dustin told The Dodo.
The shelter indeed called the smile of Zeus an “aggressive behavior” that made him “unadoptable.”
When Dustin decided to adopt him the shelter tried to talk him out of it saying the canine was “antisocial and untrained”.
But he was set to give that pooch a chance.
“I was drawn to the sad boy in the corner of his kennel,” Dustin said. “I said I’d take him home and if he turned out to not be a good fit in my home at least I gave him a few weeks of life.”
Even after months passing the poor dog still seemed sad just like he was in the shelter, but Dustin wasn’t giving up.
The dog slowly started to get used to his new home. The man also got accustomed to his sweet dog’s grin. He came to understand that when the pooch was smiling like that it meant he was excited and happy.
“I think once he finally realized that I wasn’t going to give up on him and that this was his home now, he really opened up … and his loving, goofy personality started to shine,” Dustin told The Dodo.
The smile of sweet Zeus now has turned to his trademark in Facebook groups like Dogspotting Society, he has gone viral just like in real life.
Zeus went from the “unadoptable dog” to being a beloved pooch around the town called “the smiling golden”.
“Everyone loves it!” Dustin told The Dodo. “It usually makes strangers laugh, and they want to give him tons of affection once they see it.”
“He’s typically the highlight of the day at his vet’s office, the groomer, pet store, Starbucks, and other places we frequent.”
Five years have passed since Dustin adopted Zeus and even though at first the golden retriever didn’t seem the perfect pet he has proven that he was indeed a perfect one.
“He’s been with me through some of the worst times in my life. And on every single bad day, his smile has made me smile,” Dustin said.
“I might have adopted him, but he definitely rescued me.”
Wow what a sweet amazing story, shows that every dog is a great pet they only need a chance to shine.
