Usually for species in nature the mother is the one who nurtures, takes care and raises her newborns and for a father to do that is far more unlikely.
In an animal kingdom you almost never get to see a “single dad”.
But there are still stories when the male steps up to take care of his little ones especially if the mother is unable to do that.
Recently a male swan has gone viral for the fact that he was taking care of his little ones after his partner passed away.
A swan couple recently made a home near the Charles River Esplanade in Boston, Massachusetts, they hatched 9 cygnets and visitors loved the family, they soon became local celebrities.
But the sweet family soon dealt with a tragic story: the mother passed away.
“Animal Care and Control received a call with concerns over the female swan’s health, as she seemed to have been bobbing her head and couldn’t stand up on her own,” Emma Feeney, marketing and events coordinator for the Esplanade Association, told The Dodo. “But by the time animal control arrived at the park, unfortunately, the female swan had passed.”
The deceased swan was taken away by Boston Animal Control, and the father was seen taking over the mom role taking care of the little ones; he was spotted “at the nest with their cygnets tucked under his wings.”
That was a clear sign that even though the mom passed away the little ones would be fine thanks to their caring dad.
Visitors were so sad for the passing of the swan mother but they still continued to visit the lagoon in order to see the father and the little ones. During the visit a man named Matthew Raifman caught an inspiring sight and ran for his camera.
“I noticed something was kind of unusual,” Matthew told WBZ-TV. “All the baby cygnets were on top of the papa swan.”
He took a few pictures of the sweet dad giving his chicks a ride on his back (while one was tailing behind in the water). He called it “probably the best photo I’ve ever taken,” and described the situation as “one of the most heartbreaking and heartwarming stories in a while.”
He stated that as a father of a toddler himself he truly felt for the single swan dad. “I felt sort of a kindler spirit with this papa swan that is just trying to be resilient in the face of a pretty challenging life,” Matthew told WBZ-TV.
“I can relate on some level, I think, to what it’s like to be a new dad struggling with a challenging situation you need to overcome.”
The act of the swan dad turned a tragic story into an inspiring one, now locals go out to visit the esplanade to see this heroic dad swan.
“They seem to be doing well,” Emma Feeney told The Dodo. “You can tell that he’s just a great, great father to them. It’s very adorable.”
“They’ve been through so much, but they seem so strong.”
Nature always gives us this kind of sweet message.
